What is Substrate?

Substrate is the technical term for the underlying surface or material that paint is applied to, such as drywall, wood, concrete, metal, or masonry. Understanding the substrate is fundamental to selecting the correct primer, paint, and application method. Different substrates have different porosity, texture, and chemical properties that affect adhesion and paint performance.
