What is Stain?

A stain is a semi-transparent or solid-color coating applied to wood surfaces to enhance or change the color while allowing the natural grain and texture to show through. Unlike paint, which forms an opaque film on top of the surface, penetrating stains soak into the wood fibers. Stains are commonly used on decks, fences, siding, and interior woodwork. They require periodic reapplication as they wear away rather than peel, making maintenance easier than painted wood surfaces.
