What is Scraping?

Scraping is the mechanical removal of loose, peeling, or flaking paint from a surface using a putty knife, paint scraper, or wire brush before repainting. Thorough scraping is a critical preparation step — painting over loose paint traps the failure beneath the new coat and causes premature peeling. On exterior projects, scraping is typically followed by sanding, priming, and caulking to fully restore the surface before topcoat application.
