What is a Basecoat?

A basecoat is the initial layer of paint applied before topcoats. It covers underlying stains and dark colors, creating a uniform, neutral foundation. By blocking old colors from bleeding through, a basecoat allows the topcoat to cover evenly and reduces the total number of finish coats needed for complete coverage.
